Thank you for this post of deep beauty Erica, it really feels like Bóinn is coming through in the most creative and rousing of ways - on our retreat on her banks in October she came through in people's night dreams. It's like she's wanting to make herself known again and so, it's so deeply moving to read and be inspired by your words. & happy birthday, Lá Fhéile Erica! 😍 Sending humongous hugs across the Atlantic Xx
Ah, céad míle buíochas, Jen, for sharing your heartful words here. I really appreciate them. I agree, it does feel that Bóinn is calling to make her presence known. I've felt a deep resonance with her throughout the fall season. So, it felt incredibly important to my heart and spirit to share this piece during Winter Solstice season. I'm giggling as I attempt to put the sensation into words and all I can access is: "It had to be done. And it had to be published on Dec.21st". The piece has a voice and spirit all its own that longed to share the importance of remembering the Mother who holds/held the Winter Solstice Sun/Son.
Míle buíochas for the birthday wishes - it truly was a magical day filled with powerful ravens, beautiful trees, and the wondrous chill of the Winter Season.
Humongous hugs received - and I'm sending some back across the sea!
This is so beautiful. I love the way that you are weaving they stories and your life. I haven't seen the ice candles before. Can you expand on that a little? The tradition and how to create them?
Céad míle buíochas for your warm comment and wonderful questions 🙏🏻🙏🏻 . You know, in the weaving of this piece I found myself wishing I knew the full story behind the personal reason/ birthday tradition of the ice candles. My mother started it years ago when I was born; unfortunately, I didn't think to ask her for the story until after she passed. I do know my mom loved the lights of the Christmas season and the peacefulness of winter snow. She also had a gift for creating magical experiences for my brother and I. My inkling is the personal tradition of these candles started with wanting to honour the beauty and light of the season, alongside my birthday. Almost like a special magical gift I'd receive ever year, resting amongst glowing snowbanks at the end of the driveway - maybe like a signal to the stars to say 'I am here'.
I find the latter statement particularly interesting (as it came to me in writing this) because I did do some Googling after reading your question. My mother's ancestry is French-Canadian, so when I asked my father about the story, he said that my mom had shared that it was a French-Canadian tradition. Now, in my brief searching, I wasn't able to find a connection there. However, I did learn that ice lanterns are said to be traditions in several cold-climate countries, like Finland, Norway, Russia, Germany, and Japan. Sometimes ice lanterns were used to light the way for ships; other times it was a means of bringing light into darker landscapes when there was very limited hours of sunlight during this particular time of year. However, I felt drawn to reading the tradition of ice lanterns honouring loved ones past. From what I gathered, it seems a common through-line of the tradition is bringing light/beauty into the dark season and serving as guideposts for souls (whether of this realm or the next) - I think that's why my personal sentiments of the ice candle being a signal to the stars, and the sacredly held Otherworld, as 'I am here' resonates.
When it comes to making them, I have to be honest, I've never made one myself. I'm very grateful to have such special family members and a partner who keeps the tradition alive - in honour of the birthday tradition started by my mother over three decades ago. From what I understand, they can be made with two containers one small enough to fit inside the larger (and weighted down). The weight within the smaller container should hold the place for the candle to sit, as water poured within the larger vessel will freeze and create a 'doughnut-like' shape when frozen.
Again, I wish to offer a heartfelt céad míle buíochas for your questions and the opportunity to explore the history and my personal connection to this tradition - while also honouring the heart and spirit of my mother, as she sings amongst the stars upon the other side of the veil.
Thank you so much for your detailed exploration of this tradition. It’s so beautiful that you still have family members that keep this tradition alive.
I love the way that your intuition never it was a message to the stars as I am here. I’m seriously considering doing this tradition for myself I think it’s so beautiful. I do have a pinch of French in me that came from the Celtic pilgrimage to Ireland.
The idea that this tradition is a light in the dark lighting the way. That how I set the intention for healing others, being the light that sits with them in the dark until they’re ready to walk into the light.
I resonate with how you hold space for others. Similarly, I feel that my dán calls me to hold the light steady as others dive into their inner worlds to remember/reconnect with their own inner light and wisdom.
Míle buíochas for sharing and reaching out 🙏🏻🙏🏻 - it's a joy to connect with you.
And, if the ice candles resonate, I hope they bring much beauty and light to you.
Thank you it’s lovely to connect with similar people, that create seeds of inspiration for others. I will be trying I’ve candles at some.
I was talking with my friend and her mom did ice candles a little different. She melted wax over ice cubes in a milk box. When the ice melted there where all these holes from where the ice was and the light reflected through the holes
Beautiful Erica and happy birthday Solstice babe 💫🙏💕🌀 Keep an eye out in the coming days I will share some of my experience journeying with Bóann across a Solstice retreat 🌊 🌞
